Africa

Duke CE opened its Johannesburg office in 2008 in response to existing clients’ needs, but quickly came to realize that South Africa offered a wide range of opportunities.  Not just opportunities to teach, but also opportunities to learn.

South Africa is a remarkable place—a nation that has peacefully transitioned from apartheid, through reconciliation, to politically becoming an African and emerging market leader. South African companies tend to be better engaged with the issues of society than most companies in the world. Through social and regulatory means, South Africa is dramatically transforming its economy—which is already the largest in Africa—to create greater opportunities for previously disadvantaged individuals.

Leaders at South African companies, and companies headquartered elsewhere operating in South Africa, need to deal with complexity, ambiguity, and uncertainty; and at the same time be engaged with the issues of broader society.  They need to cultivate relationships with people different from themselves, and seek out competitive advantage in an inclusive work environment that taps into a full range of creativity and problem solving.  As such there is much global companies can learn from South Africa.

For Duke CE, South Africa is also the gateway to the rest of Africa—an exciting place that matters.
